Our hotel offered made-to-order omelets as part of their free breakfast. I couldn’t pass that up! We filled the car with gas, and were on our way across the high Wyoming desert. We crossed the pioneer trails west of South Pass, then the Lander cutoff of the Oregon trail. The wagon ruts from 160 years ago are still very visible. We traced the route of early trappers toward Jackson Hole and stopped at Grand Teton National Park. There we waded in Jenny Lake and took pictures of the mountains.
Continuing on to Yellowstone, we saw two or three herds of bison. One HUGE bull was grazing close to the road, so lots of cars were stopped with people taking pictures. He strolled over to within about 20 yards of us, and Mom was sure he was looking her right in the eye as she took his picture.
We were hoping to get to the Bear and Wolf Reserve in West Yellowstone, but didn’t arrive until after it had closed. So we went on to our motel in St. Anthony, Idaho, about 75 minutes away. We are staying there because it saves about $200/night on motel bills.
